Despite what you might hear on LinkedIn, Instagram, or wherever the latest "guru" influencer is hanging out, building a business is a grind. No matter how compelling someone makes their workshop or course sound to "10X your revenue overnight," real business growth takes grit, time, and strategy.
To break up the usual corporate chat, I wanted to pay homage to some great indie, rock, and country music that I genuinely love—because it turns out musicians often give better business advice than the gurus.
Here are 8 tracks of pure business wisdom. All killer, no filler.
1. On Overnight Success
"Easy Money" — Rickie Lee Jones
The Lesson: I'm with Rickie on this one. There ain't no such thing as easy money. If a strategy or a buyer’s offer sounds too good to be true, it almost always is.
2. On Carving Out Your Market
"The Meteorologist" — Liz Stringer
The Lesson: In a world saturated with generalists, find your niche and stick to it fiercely. Deep expertise beats broad mediocrity every day of the week.
3. On Cashflow and Funding
"The Arrangement" — The Woodland Hunters
The Lesson: There's money everywhere right now with 24-hour digital approvals. I know it's incredibly hard for small businesses to borrow from our Big 4 building societies at times, but it is still sage advice to stay far away from the modern equivalent of loan sharks. Debt structure matters.
4. On Compliance and Integrity
"Tennessee Plates" — John Hiatt
The Lesson: Pay your taxes. It's good advice all around, but a special shout-out to the companies that treat compliance as an afterthought—clean records are the first thing a serious buyer looks for.
5. On Knowing When to Step Away
"Lonesome On'ry & Mean" — Waylon Jennings
The Lesson: Don't stay in your business too long. The subtle subtext of Waylon's lyrics is that if you are hellbent on staying at the helm, at least get some good advice to make the operation more profitable, less stressful, and significantly easier to sell eventually.
6. On Navigating Business Trips
"Kalgoorlie" — The Peep Tempel
The Lesson: Just good all-around advice for corporate travel. Be incredibly careful of exotic characters and late-night deals in regional towns.
7. On Personal Growth
"I Need A Teacher" — Hiss Golden Messenger
The Lesson: A straight-up, undeniable truth. Every great operator needs a mentor, an advisor, or a sounding board to call them out when they're stuck in their own head.
8. On Cleaning Up the Operational Mess
"This Mess We're In" — PJ Harvey & Thom Yorke
The Lesson: Chaos is a natural part of running a fast-growing business. But it's ultimately up to you to fix it. The good news? As Hiss Golden Messenger points out above, you don't necessarily have to do it completely on your own.
Happy listening,
All the best, Michael
